Knowing how to stop your dog from barking when he refuses to is the challenge. This is the time when you need to become the alpha dog leader and let your German Shepherd know that you are in charge. And because you are establishing yourself as the alpha leader, your German Shepherd is trusting you as the leader of the pack.
Anxiety can be another reason why your dog continues to bark.
This symptom might stem from you leaving the house (the pack) for any length of time and he is trying to call out to you. So your German Shepherd dog does the only natural thing he knows… that is barking. He will continue to bark until you return.
The reason for this is that you might have created this problem yourself. In other words, you might have in past rewarded your dog by greeting him with attention right when you first arrive, thus your dog is expecting this and now it is part of his learned behavior.
The best thing to break him of this behavior is to ignore your dog for about 10 – 15 minutes when you first arrive. That way he can stop associating your return with attention.
Teach your dog when to speak and when to be quiet.
By creating a command that lets you control your German Shepherds’ behavior, he will learn to control his barking when it is not necessary.
And just why is this a good idea?
This will benefit you because if there was an intruder in your house you of course want your dog to bark. Or if there was something that you did not want your dog to bark at like someone walking by your front yard like a jogger or a mother pushing a stroller, you do not want your German Shepherd barking.
